Ericsson T28 & Variants

When dismantling any phone, great care should be taken to ensure that no damage is caused to any of the parts.  Rough handling may result in severe damage of many parts, and if proper anti-static procedures are not followed, electrostatic damage may result in any electronic component.

Before commencing, it is recommended that the correct tools are purchased for the job in hand.  If you do not have access to the proper Ericsson service tools, stiff but non-brittle plastic can be used as a substitute (cut up an old floppy disk, but you may have to chamfer the edges).

Step 1.    Firstly, remove the battery and aerial.  The aerial may well be tightly secured, but can be released by firmly grasping it and whilst pulling it away from the top of the phone, waggle it from side to side as demonstrated in the photo below.

Step 2.  After the aerial has been removed, you should be looking at the view below.  The green sticker in the photo is a warranty sticker.  If this sticker is damaged, or not present, someone has already been inside the phone and the warranty is already invalidated.

Step 3.  Holding the phone away from you, insert the tool (or piece of plastic) into the join between the plastic fascia and the metal back of the phone.  Once it is lined up and in place, twist the tool towards you (gently) so that the blade of the tool sits inside the plastic fascia and the tool itself lies against the side of the phone.

Step 4.  Now that the tool is in place, gently but firmly slide it in each direction to disengage the locking lugs/catches that secure the fascia to the metal back of the phone.  Be careful here, it is all too easy to damage the lugs themselves.  Repeat step 3 on the opposite side of the phone, and again slide the tool from side to side to disengage the catches on this side too.

Step 5.  Leaving the two tools you have used to loosen the sides on the phone in place, use a third tool in a similar manner described above to disengage the catches at the top of the phone, moving it in the manner shown below.  Again, exercise caution here not to damage the locking catches.

Step 6.  Now that both sides and the top of the phone are loose, you can fold the fascia away from the back of the phone.  Remove the fascia from top to bottom in the same manner as reading a book.  Do NOT attempt to lift it completely clear of the back panel, as the two are still joined at this stage by the microphone cable.

Step 7.  In the photo below, we see a close-up view of the microphone cable assembly.  This can be simply removed by pulling it up and away from the circuit board.  Try not to exert any sideways pressure on the connector, as the pins below could easily be damaged.

Step 8.  To re-assemble the phone, firstly re-connect the microphone/flip wiring, then starting at the top of the phone, gently press the two halves together ensuring that you do not place too much pressure on the casing.  When the phone is completely re-assembled, ensure that the side slider button operates freely, and that you have not trapped the flip/microphone wiring in the bottom of the casing.

Step 9.  Once all the reassembly steps have been completed, thoroughly test all the features on the phone to ensure that you have not forgotten anything, or caused any damage whilst inside the phone.
